Portfolio entry: Reflective journals
Week 1 For my observation week, I observed the Ministry of Education S.E.A time lessons on TV 4. During my observations, I made note of the importance of enthusiasm when delivering a lesson. Teacher enthusiasm is vital for motivating students and getting them engaged in the lesson. The teacher used gestures, facial expressions, humour and voice intonations that shows how strongly she is interested in the topics. In addition to this, the teacher kept learning real, relevant and relatable. For example, she spoke about books and movies that students like. These are differently vital elements that I will be implementing when I begin my teaching practice. Week 2
My first week of teaching was a difficult but learning process. There were issues with getting my students in the right mindset for learning. My student sees me as her friend rather than a teacher/authority figure. Therefore, it was hard to get her to take me seriously and become engaged with tasks at hand. By the end of the week, these issues were somewhat rectified and my student got into a better mindset for learning. Week 4
By the third week, I got better at correcting my student and creating teachable moments when she deviates from the lesson or misses the point. I also got a better grasp at transitioning between different aspects of the lesson. I also noticed that my student was getting a hang of the lessons rather quickly and doing very well. |
Week 3
By my second week of teaching, I realized how excited my student was to come to my class. This gave me confirmation that my strategies and resources were working. I knew ahead of time that my student has a short attention span so I used resources that would engage her and I could tell that they were working. She would often say she wishes I was her teacher in real-life. |
